The Goals of the Project
The owners preferred to enjoy meals outdoors, however their existing deck was a bit too small and, as all decks, needed a few boards replaced as well as a of a fresh coat of stain. Outdoor eating was a bit of juggling match shuffling cooked food outside and for convenience, it would be nice to cook the entire meal outside rather than juggling pots and trays of hot food. This local football sports executive knew he would be moving to Los Angles in 2016 and wanted to design something that would serve their needs now and retain good resale value for a future prospective buyer.
The Landscape Architects Solutions
Expanding the deck to accommodate a family eating outside would result in the clear appearance of an “add on”. After determining costs of various options, we determined remodeling the deck was not a cost savings over a more permanent, zero maintence, stamped and dyed concrete flooring.
We removed the existing deck, transplanted some of the trees and shrubs to save cost along with the added benefit of creating space for a patio large enough for the entire family to both cook and dine outside. A stamped and dyed concrete patio, larger than the area of the original deck now adjoins the house to create a seamless transition from indoor to outdoor space. To insure shade over the living area a cedar wood pergola with white columns matching the home columns created the canopy, coziness, and shade. Electric and natural gas lines seamlessly provide service the outdoor kitchen, complete with refrigerator, grill, and its set up now for a future fireplace. The kitchen island has a native limestone veneer and granite countertop.
A walkway with the same flooring connects the patio to the garage and driveway for family and guests. Plantings include Hydrangea, Liriope, Holly, Hostas, Japanese Maples, Boxwoods and a few pockets for seasonal flowers.
