Fire Pit FAQs

Which type of fire pit is best?

The best fire pit is the one that you enjoy and will use for years to come.

Fire pits come in many shapes and sizes. To narrow down which one is best, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Do you want a permanent installation or would you like to move it when not in use?
  • Would you prefer the convenience of gas or the tradition of wood burning?
  • Is placement/distance from your home and neighbors a consideration?

We can walk you through your choices and get you cozied up by the fire in no time.

Is it more affordable to build or buy a fire pit?

There are three primary options for getting a fire pit for your home:

  1. Pre-manufactured fire pit kits
  2. DIY fire pits
  3. Professionally designed, installed, and maintained fire pits

Of these options, DIY pits are the most affordable, but they can be far more time-consuming and labor-intensive than the other two options. They may also pose challenges for people who haven’t built fire pits before. Pre-manufactured kits are a compromise between convenience and price, being far easier to install than a DIY solution but being more affordable than hiring professionals.

For a pit that is safely designed, built to last, and fully compliant with all regulations, there is no better option than hiring professionals who are familiar with your area. While the initial upfront costs may be higher than premanufactured kits or DIY options, they ensure stability and longevity so that your investment will last for decades.

How do you clean a fire pit?

  1. Extinguish the fire entirely.
  2. Let the area cool completely.
  3. Remove ash and other debris, disposing of them in a safe manner.
  4. Use a hard-bristled brush and soapy water to clean the pit and grate, if you have one.
  5. Wipe down with a soft cloth or paper towels.
  6. Protect with a dedicated fire pit cover when not in use.

Can I cook over my gas fire pit?

A natural gas-powered fire pit is fine for roasting marshmallows and other small snacks. For larger meals, however, a fire pit specifically created for outdoor cooking, a charcoal grill, or other cooking station in an outdoor kitchen is preferable.

Is a portable propane fire pit better than a permanent wood-burning fire pit?

A propane fire pit isn’t necessarily better than a wood-burning fire pit; just what’s best for you.

Considerations when comparing portable propane fire pits and permanent wood-burning fire pits include:

  • Budget. Usually, permanent fire pits are more expensive to install and maintain than portable options.
  • Durability. Permanent installations are usually more durable than portable options.
  • Portability. Portable fire pits offer greater convenience and flexibility than permanent structures.
  • Availability of fuel type. Consider how readily available propane or wood logs are in your area.
  • Local bylines and regulations. Certain types of fire pits, smokers, and fireplaces may be prohibited by your local government or HOA.

What materials are safe to use in a DIY fire pit?

Materials that St. Louis homeowners commonly use in their DIY fire pits include high-heat mortar, fire bricks, concrete blocks, metal, and natural stone.

What safety precautions should I take when using a fire pit?

Safety precautions to take when using a fire pit or other fire feature, like an outdoor fireplace, include:

  • Building the pit at least ten feet away from any building, furniture in a seating area, or other potential fire hazard
  • Consider the wind and avoid lighting fires on particularly windy days
  • Never leave a fire burning unsupervised
  • Completely extinguish all fires before leaving the area

How do I safely extinguish a fire in a fire pit?

For gas-burning pits:

  1. Turn off the gas supply.
  2. Let the pit cool completely.
  3. Cover.

For wood-burning pits:

  1. Plan ahead. Do not add any extra fuel or fire starter to the pit at least an hour before you intend to put the fire out. In the meantime, get a shovel or poker and a source of water or sand handy.
  2. Drown, Stir, Repeat. Use the water (or sand) to completely douse the pit, until you can no longer hear a hissing sound. Use the poker or shovel to stir or mix the contents of the pit. Pour more water (or sand) onto the pit, until sizzling sounds stop. Repeat as needed.
  3. Feel. Place the hand a few inches away from the doused ashes. If heat remains, repeat Step #2.
